1992 Mustang Convertible, 5.0 LX
Wow, take a look here at this 1992
Mustang LX 5.0 convertible. It's a little bit of a project, but WOW what
a lot of car for not alot of money...invest a little in fixing it up, and this
could be a car you enjoy for YEARS and then turn a profit! This is
originally a Florida car, which accounts for it's lack of any serious rust
(only surface rust underneath). It had 2 owners prior to me, an excellent
history for an 18 year old car. The story goes that the original fellow
purchased the car and drove and enjoyed it for many years. He spent
thousands on upgrades and ultimately lost interest and sold it to a fellow
local to me here in CT. That fellow owned the car for many years until
one day he came out and the car didn't start. Not being any kind of
mechanic, he decided to just go buy another car which he did from a Ford dealership. After driving the new car for a couple of years, he
decided he wanted to trade both in and buy an suv. I overheard talk of a
super-low mileage Mustang and agreed to purchase the car. It came in not
running-which turned out to be a very minor problem with a kill-switch
installed by the original owner. I had it removed and the car started
right up. She was noisy but ran strong and pulled hard. It needed
tires so I went on craigslist and found a GREAT set of 245/50/16s for it which
I had installed. The engine had a clattering noise, so the technician
diagnosed that it needed a lifter. All
were replaced. That work was done, but when the car back there was still
a minor ticking. That tick has now gotten louder again-we agree that the
car needs a rocker or two, too. However, the car starts and runs
great...and the ticking is nothing more than an annoyance. I have driven
it back and forth to work on many occassions-over 30 miles each way with no
problems. My mechanic told me that the inside of the engine was immaculate-it
appeared that fresh fluids had always been kept in the car and that he saw no
sludge to speak of when in there doing the lifters. A carfax
was run on the car, which supports all the information supplied here-except for one
entry. The second owner took it for emmissions in CT. The
emmissions tech didn't believe that the car only had 40k miles on it-so he
entered exactly 90,000 miles for the mileage. That was an error, and
everything else supports the car being an actual 44k mile car.
Mechanically, this car starts right
up, runs like a bear, stops well and straight, and goes down the road
fine. My commute is done at approximately 75 mph if not more-no
problems. The engine has what I think is a GT-40 motorsport intake,
headers, a high-flow h-pipe with 2 cats, and a cam (I would bet it's a
motorsport cam, too...but that's just a guess). It also has a huge cone
filter that was just cleaned and oiled. It has a new cap, rotor, plugs,
and wires. The car is running at about 15 degrees initial timing right
now-I think the car could be run as high as 20 degrees without detonation on 93
octane. I tuned it back because the clutch is slipping, though only when
you get into it. The car will still get a 1st, 2nd, AND 3rd gear scratch
and the tranny feels GREAT. The car had to have an emmissions test to be
registered in CT...it passed with flying colors. It does have some
exhaust leaks, too...it's noisy but actually sounds pretty mean. The car
has an "x" brace on the lower front chassis, welded-in subframe
connectors, and a strut-tower brace up front as seen in the pics, too. I
just installed a brand-new Clarion AM/FM/CD player, and the car has 2 Boston
Acoustics speakers in the rear side-panels and 2 new Polk Audio speakers in the
doors. In the trunk is an MTX amplifier running 3-channel, powering one
12" subwoofer.
The car has some roughness in it's
appearance-the nose piece has been replaced, though it looks like it was from a
fender bender, not a major accident. The front of the passenger fender
also got some "home" body work-with some bondo and somebody doing the
worst possible job of sanding. The headlights are faded, the hood has
several dents in it as does the trunk lid. A replacement aftermarket
fender is around $80, set of 6 headlights on Ebay run around $100, and the car
should get a fiberglass hood anyway to enhance it's mean look. Have a
local body shop spray it all...and under $1000 the car could be very
presentable. The rockers and door sills are all excellent (see pics) and
I don't really find any rust on this car anywhere, except surface rust that you
would expect. The top has some minor holes and I would recommend a
replacement. It does go down on it's own power, but you have to
"help" it up. Also, the right rear power window needs help to get up and down. The driver's side latch on the top does not
engage-I'm sure it could be replaced or encouraged to work-the previous owner
was using a small clamp, fix it or use it like he did. The trunk carpet
is gone-there had been mice living in there at one time and it smelled bad so I
threw it out. The interior actually looks decent, the back seat and
passenger seat are excellent, the driver's seat has a wear-through on the
bolster and a stain, though it might be removable. The underneath of the
car looks decent, with only surface rust, except that there is a spot where the
passenger's front seat rear bolt attaches-it looks to me like a jack was put
there and it pushed a small hole up in that area (probably 2" across or
smaller). Again, there is a pic-forgive it's blurriness-but I think it
gets the point across. I think a mallet, a small scrap of metal and an
hour's work and this is worked out fine. It is NOT a rust-through
spot. I don't think it's the end of the world-but I'm going out of my way
to describe everything so I want you to know it all.
So, in effect, here's what you have:
-a nice driver that you could pick
up and drive home ( I drive it all the time, and have title in my name, in my
hand)
-clear title with a good history
-an original 5.0 that was owned by
adults and modified properly
-a vehicle that needs cosmetics and
a clutch to be a really nice toy
Please, bid only if you are
serious. I really, really like this car-but I have another agenda and
think I would be better served to sell it. Again, this car is currently
registered and insured in CT and is driven every week. I would not
be afraid to set off on a several hundred mile trip-though I would address the
engine rocker(s) and clutch in the next couple of months if I were to
keep it.
Deposit of $1000 by paypal upon
completion of bid, balance by bank check, paypal, or money order or cash AND pickup of
vehicle within 7 days. Please
ask questions first-I will be available email. I will work
with your shipper if you want to ship-but you will pay for their
services.
Thanks! Happy bidding!
