For auction is a 1982 Seca 500, or XJ550. Bike has a salvage title, but it is clear with current tags and is in my name. I have invested alot of time and money getting it to where it is now, but all told it still needs more work. The new:
- Clear Salvage Title in my name, good tags through October
- Carb boots (these aren't cheap!)
- Carb needle seat O rings
- Carbs completely gone through, spotless inside
- Tachometer Cable
- Rear tire (about 300 miles on tire)
- New front brake pads
- New front brake master cylinder
The good:
- Has a left side cover!
- All lighting works (turn/brake/headlight/gauges)
- Charging system works flawless, battery near new
- Plenty of tread front tire
- Original fuse box replaced with inline fuse holders
- Gauges work (except fuel gauge)
- Valves recently adjusted ($100 in shims!!)
- Clutch is tight, no slipping at all, pull is not ridiculous
Bike runs ok off idle, especially when warmed up, rides nicely, transmission shifts through all gears fine. Engine will rev easily to redline, smoothly with no hiccups. Bike tracks very nice, does good commuting or on back roads. Bike gets about 48 MPG regularly ridden conservatively (commuting).
The Bad:
- Misfires at idle, suspected burnt exhaust valve in second cylinder from left side
- Ticking from valvetrain at engine speeds from idle to about 5000 RPM
- Tricky to start cold, and due to bad exhaust valve idles poorly until warmed up
- Once warmed up idle is much smoother, idle very stable
- Slight exhaust leak from collector under engine
- Seat top cover pulling from stitching at rear, small holes top middle
- Missing right side cover
- Rear rim slight bend at bead, right side
- Original run switch broken, but have another run/start switch installed next to it
- Ignition switch has been tampered with, same with gas lock, but all work OK
- Fork seal leaks right side, even though there's a new seal in, suspect fork tubes are ever so slightly bent, cannot see this with a naked eye. Fork tubes are pitted.
- Scratch in tank, left side; blemish on right exhaust from battery acid; many other scratches/blemishes, review the photos
I have been riding this bike to work every day for the past 3 months, without issue other than continually working through known issues. You could too. Bike can be ridden and fixed from the condition it is in now, or be used as a donor for your Seca with no or bad title. Price is LOW, and NO RESERVE. I've described the bike to the best of my ability, and don't believe I've left anything out.
I can help with transport within Northern Cal, or to Socal, but please ASK FIRST. Cost of transport to you would be one tank of gas for my truck, about $80 at today's prices. Of course you can come and pick it up too, or ride it home.
